The Custom Tattoo Design Process — What to Expect
The custom tattoo design process has five steps: consultation, hand-drawn sketch, design review, the tattoo session, and aftercare. The whole thing typically takes 1-4 weeks from first contact to finished tattoo, depending on complexity. Here is how each step works.
How does a custom tattoo consultation work?
Every custom tattoo begins with a consultation. You fill out the booking form on my website with your idea, placement preference, approximate size, and any reference images you like. It does not need to be a finished concept. Some clients come with a detailed sketch. Others send me a Pinterest board and say "something like this, but more minimal." Both are perfect starting points. I respond within 48 hours to confirm the booking and ask any follow-up questions about what you are envisioning.
How is a custom tattoo design created?
Once we agree on the direction, I start drawing. Every design I create is hand-sketched from scratch. I do not use templates, AI generators, or pre-made stencils. Depending on the complexity, this takes anywhere from a few hours to a few days. I consider not just what looks good on paper, but how the design will sit on your body — how it flows with the muscle, how it wraps around the shape of your arm or ribs, and how it will age over time. This is where my background in architecture comes in. Proportion and spatial awareness are instinctive to me after years of drafting and designing buildings.
Can I change the design before the session?
You will see the design before your appointment. I send a digital preview so we can discuss any changes. Want the leaves a little smaller? The line weight slightly thicker? A different flower in the arrangement? This is your custom tattoo design, and I want you to love it before we commit it to skin. Most designs go through one or two rounds of revision. There is no rush.
What happens during the tattoo session?
On the day of your appointment, you come to my studio in Punavuori, Helsinki. We place the stencil on your skin and check the positioning together — you will see exactly where it goes before anything is permanent. Then we start. A small fine line tattoo usually takes one to two hours. Medium pieces can take two to four hours. I work with single needles and small needle groupings to achieve those delicate, thin lines that fine line tattoos are known for.
What aftercare does a new tattoo need?
After the session, I provide detailed aftercare instructions. The healing process takes about four weeks. During that time, no sauna, no swimming, and plenty of moisturizer. If any small area needs a touch-up after healing, I offer that within the first three months at no extra cost. The goal is a tattoo you are proud of for life.
Why get a custom tattoo instead of flash?
A custom tattoo design process takes more time than picking something off the wall, but the result is something that belongs to you and only you. It is designed for your body, your story, and your aesthetic. If you have been thinking about getting a custom tattoo in Helsinki but were not sure how to start — now you know. Fill out the booking form and let us create something together.
